Colts receiver Keenan Allen charged with two misdemeanor DUI offenses

Summary

Indianapolis police filed misdemeanor charges against Colts wide receiver Keenan Allen for operating a vehicle with a blood-alcohol level of .224 and for operating while intoxicated.

Indianapolis police formally charged Colts wide receiver Keenan Allen this week with two misdemeanor offenses stemming from his August 30 arrest for drunk driving. Prosecutors filed a Class A misdemeanor for operating a vehicle with a blood-alcohol concentration of .15 or higher and a Class C misdemeanor for operating while intoxicated, based on a probable-cause affidavit that recorded Allen’s breath-test result at .224.

According to the affidavit, officers stopped Allen at 1 a.m. after he parked in a no-parking zone. After he exited the vehicle, an officer detected the smell of alcohol and administered a portable breath test, which initially could not be read but later showed the .224 level at 1:22 a.m. He was taken into custody, underwent a field-sobriety assessment that officers said indicated intoxication, and later had a blood draw at 2:08 a.m. The results of the blood test were not disclosed.

Coach Shane Steichen said the team will allow the legal process to proceed and that any NFL discipline will follow the league’s substance-abuse policy, which can impose a three-game suspension for such violations. An attorney conference is scheduled for Oct. 26. Allen, who signed a one-year contract with the Colts in August, is not expected to miss playing time while the case moves through the courts.
