Falcons undecided on Week 2 starting quarterback

Summary

Head coach Kevin Stefanski said the team has not yet chosen a starter for the upcoming game against the Panthers, keeping all options open.

Atlanta head coach Kevin Stefanski did not announce a starting quarterback for the Falcons' Week 2 home game against the Carolina Panthers during Wednesday's press conference. The team began the season with Cooper Rush after Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix were listed as inactive for the opener against Pittsburgh. Tagovailoa missed Wednesday's practice because of an oblique injury, while Rush, who is receiving treatment for a back issue, and Penix, cleared for full practice after returning from a torn ACL, remained available.

"We will have a quarterback for this week. Not yet, but we’ll work through that this week. I’m not ruling anyone out," Stefanski said.

When asked about undrafted rookie Jack Strand, Stefanski confirmed he has not been eliminated as a possible option. He did not specify whether Penix is receiving first-team reps that would indicate a green light for game action, leading analysts to view another start for Rush as the most probable scenario. The Falcons will face the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night before a longer break ahead of Week 4.
