Watson says media expects unrealistic passing numbers as Browns prepare for Week 2
Deshaun Watson dismissed media pressure for 400-yard, five-touchdown games ahead of the Browns' Week 2 road matchup, emphasizing focus on winning and ball security.
Deshaun Watson will start for the Cleveland Browns on Sunday in a road game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, following a preseason in which he was booed by some fans. In a Wednesday press conference, Watson said the media has set an expectation that he should throw for 400 yards and five touchdowns each week, adding that his priority is to play well enough to help the team win. > "No, I think personally, I think all that is for the media. I think the media has this expectation that I’m supposed to throw [for] 400 yards and five touchdowns every week. So, until that happens, I guess it’s going to be the same situation. Again, my job is to make sure I’m operating well so we can try to get a win and keep moving forward from there," he said. Watson reviewed the Browns' Week 1 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, noting that he had one turnover and a sack-fumble that was recovered, and that the offense lacked red-zone opportunities. He described his performance as focusing on finding completions and operating well, while acknowledging missed throws and a pick. The Browns' offense also incurred several pre-snap penalties in that game. The team will host the Carolina Panthers for its home opener in Week 3.
