Mariska Hargitay hosts Emmys, changes outfits 13 times

Summary

Actress Mariska Hargitay hosted the Emmy Awards on Sept. 14, appearing in at least 13 different ensembles, including a red sequined gown that echoed her mother Jayne Mansfield's 1956 look.

Mariska Hargitay, star of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," served as the Emmy Awards host for the first time on Sept. 14. Throughout the ceremony she changed outfits at least 13 times, beginning with a flowing red sequined gown on the red carpet that matched a similar dress worn by her 15-year-old daughter, Amaya. Hargitay attended the event with husband Peter Hermann and their sons, August, 20, and Andrew, 14.

The mother-daughter red dresses were noted by observers as a nod to the red dress Jayne Mansfield, Hargitay’s mother, wore in the 1956 musical "The Girl Can’t Help It." Earlier in the evening Hargitay had received two Emmys for her HBO documentary "My Mom Jayne."

During the broadcast she delivered her opening monologue in a strapless off-white dress, joked about the audience’s former "SVU" guest stars, highlighted her role as the first female host in 15 years, and recreated a well-known Nicole Kidman advertisement for AMC. Additional looks included a sleek black gown with matching gloves, a satin white suit, and a fur-lined cape paired with a sword.

"It’s been an absolute delight to be your host," Hargitay said as the ceremony concluded. "Thank you for all the love and joy tonight."

"And now that we’ve reached the end, there’s only one thing left to do," she added as the signature "dun, dun" from "Law & Order: SVU" played.
