Poland Boosts Border Security After Drone Strikes Near Ukraine Frontier

Summary

Poland announced reinforcement of its border infrastructure with Ukraine following Russian drone attacks, while NATO members reported similar incidents across the region.

Poland's defence minister said the country is strengthening border-guard infrastructure after two Russian drone strikes near crossings with Ukraine. The attacks, which included a strike on a train carrying former Western officials, prompted the deployment of the 18th Engineer Regiment to reinforce checkpoints.

"Recent days show that Russia’s actions threaten the security of all of Europe. In accordance with our government’s decision, the infrastructure used by the Border Guard is being strengthened," the minister wrote on X.

The Russian defence ministry confirmed the strikes, claiming the train was transporting military cargo. In Lithuania, a drone equipped with an explosive device was shot down for the first time, and Italian officials reported that a NATO fighter jet downed a drone they believed originated from Russia. Denmark also said a Russian warship fired emergency flares at a Danish helicopter conducting routine photography in international waters.

Ukrainian foreign minister Andrii Sybiha expressed support for Denmark, calling the Russian action provocative and unacceptable.

NATO secretary-general Mark Rutte described the incidents as reflecting Russian attempts to sow fear and pledged to reinforce the alliance's eastern flank. The United States is reportedly mediating a proposal for a mutual halt to attacks on energy infrastructure, a step both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian officials have described as a tentative suggestion rather than a binding agreement.
