Tesla launches Cybercab robotaxi in Austin amid federal safety review

Summary

Tesla's two-seat, steering-wheel-free Cybercab began commercial service in Austin, Texas, with an age restriction for riders under 13 and a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration audit into its safety certification.

Tesla has started commercial operation of its Cybercab robotaxi in Austin, Texas. The two-seat vehicle lacks a steering wheel, pedals and mirrors, relying on cameras and artificial intelligence for navigation. Passengers must wear seat belts, and the service enforces an age limit that bars children under 13 from riding, while teenagers aged 13 to 17 may travel only with an adult accompanying them.

The Cybercab does not include LATCH or ISOFIX child-seat anchors; any booster seat must be secured with a seat belt. The cabin features a dedicated emergency Stop button that requests an immediate pull-over and connects the rider to Robotaxi Support, as well as a mechanical door release lever for power-loss situations. Windows can be lowered but not fully opened, and USB-C charging ports are available for devices.

On September 4, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an audit query into Tesla’s certification of the Cybercab, examining how the vehicle meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The review covers roughly 1,000 units and reflects the agency’s focus on the vehicle’s lack of traditional driver controls, which were not considered when many safety rules were written.

Tesla says the system can automatically deploy airbags, unlock doors, activate hazard lights, and disable the high-voltage battery in the event of a collision, while also maintaining a two-way communication link with support staff. Riders can also request a pull-over via the touchscreen or mobile app, though the vehicle may need time to reach a safe stopping point.

The rollout marks the first time the Cybercab has carried passengers, and Tesla advises users to familiarize themselves with the cabin controls before the trip begins.
