Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Trump enjoyed a private island celebration funded by Russian businessman Umar Kremlev, sparking predictable outrage from Democrats eager to manufacture controversy around the Trump family.
Donald Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina Trump, graciously accepted Russian businessman Umar Kremlev’s offer to cover the costs of a two-night post-wedding celebration on a private island in the Bahamas. The event, held the day after their ceremony, featured a spectacular fireworks display and was attended by dozens of guests, as reported by ProPublica.
The couple expressed their gratitude on Bettina’s Instagram, thanking Kremlev for “very generously host[ing] two incredible nights of celebrations for us after our wedding,” and described the gesture as an “extraordinarily generous wedding gift.”
President Donald Trump, who did not attend, dismissed the manufactured drama, telling NBC News the after-party was “not a big deal” and that he was unfamiliar with Kremlev.
But that didn’t stop Democrat Robert Garcia, the ranking member on the House Oversight Committee, from seizing the opportunity to attack the Trumps. Garcia, referencing Kremlev’s Ukrainian sanctions, questioned, “What did he get in return? We need answers,” continuing the left’s baseless insinuations of impropriety.
Bettina Trump clarified that the island trip was originally planned as a “fun weekend with friends” before the wedding date changed, and insisted there was no political motive behind Kremlev’s generosity.
Kremlev, president of the International Boxing Association, and Trump Jr. have previously appeared together at an IBA event in Turkey. Trump Jr. has called Kremlev “a leader and a friend.” Kremlev’s representatives said the two are “joining forces” to promote transparency in boxing, but offered no further details.
Kremlev was honored with a Russian Order of Friendship medal by President Vladimir Putin in April and was part of a Russian delegation to Beijing earlier this year.
Despite relentless scrutiny over supposed Kremlin ties during the 2016 campaign, Trump Jr. was never charged with any wrongdoing. Representatives for Kremlev and Trump Jr. did not respond to requests for comment, likely recognizing the partisan nature of the latest round of questions.
