California crash kills car enthusiast and Florida model after first date

Summary

James Wehr, 27, and Alexis "Lexi" Kramer, 22, died Sunday when Wehr's 2019 McLaren collided with a tree in Irvine, California, shortly after spending their first day together.

James Wehr, 27, and Alexis "Lexi" Kramer, 22, were killed around 12:20 a.m. Sunday when Wehr's 2019 McLaren struck a tree in Irvine, Orange County, splitting the vehicle and igniting a fire. Police said the car was stopped at a red light before accelerating rapidly when the light turned green, causing the driver to lose control, cross a curb and hit the tree. Authorities have not identified who was driving or disclosed the vehicle's speed.

According to a family member, Wehr arranged for Kramer, a Hooters calendar model from Lakeland, Florida, to fly to California on Friday after a month of Instagram messages. The relative said Wehr told Kramer he was separated from his wife and finalizing a divorce, though no court filing had been made. The pair spent Saturday together, including breakfast, dinner at Nobu, and drinks at the Pendry hotel, where a photograph posted to Wehr's social media showed the McLaren parked outside.

Kramer had not met Wehr in person before the trip and was aware he was married, but she said she believed his statements about the pending divorce. A family member noted that they had cautioned Kramer to be skeptical, but she chose to give him the benefit of the doubt.

The crash investigation remains ongoing, and no comment has been received from Wehr's family or business representatives.
