Israel Mobilizes Reservists for Intensified Gaza City Offensive
Israel is calling up tens of thousands of reservists as it prepares to escalate its military operations in Gaza City, aiming for a decisive victory over Hamas.
Israel is mobilizing tens of thousands of reservists in preparation for an intensified military offensive in Gaza City, targeting what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described as Hamas's last stronghold. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have escalated airstrikes and positioned troops on the city's outskirts, instructing civilians to evacuate, although many face dire conditions and limited space in southern Gaza.
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir addressed newly mobilized reservists, stating, "We are going to increase and enhance the strikes of our operation, and that is why we called you. The IDF does not offer anything less than decisive victory. We will not stop the war until we defeat this enemy."
The offensive has already resulted in significant casualties. On Tuesday alone, at least 100 Palestinians were killed in Gaza due to Israeli airstrikes, shelling, and gunfire, with 35 deaths reported in Gaza City. These strikes compound the humanitarian toll, which Gaza health authorities say includes over 62,000 Palestinians killed since the war began on October 7, 2023.
The United Nations has expressed concern over the humanitarian situation, warning that Israel's plan to take over Gaza City risks "igniting another horrific chapter" in the conflict. The UN highlighted that the operation could displace approximately one million people and exacerbate the already dire humanitarian crisis in the region.
Despite international condemnation and opposition from senior military figures like Lt. Gen. Zamir, who warns of risks to hostages and strain on military resources, Netanyahu is moving forward with the campaign. Critics warn of a humanitarian crisis, as over 80% of Gaza City's homes are already damaged, and the UN has declared famine conditions.
The IDF has urged civilians, aid groups, and medical workers to evacuate the area as the offensive ramps up. In a social media post, the IDF's Arabic-language spokesperson Avichay Adraee urged all of Gaza's residents to evacuate to a humanitarian zone in the Strip's coastal area in preparation for the expansion of fighting in the northern city.
As the conflict approaches its two-year mark, the situation remains volatile, with both military and humanitarian concerns escalating.
